Somewhere To Be: Sulphur Mountain

Somewhere To Be: Sulphur Mountain

by Daniel Noguera

For our latest installment of Somewhere To Be, @phamuel @brianchorski and I scouted a quick and dirty overnighter that starts in Ventura, climbs through Sulphur Mountain, camps just outside of Ojai, and requires no food or water packing! DANG. That’s easy.

We started in LA, riding together to catch the 2 hour train from Union station to Ventura. From there, @creekjthomas took us to one of the best fried chicken sandwiches we have collectively ever tasted (hold up - F.C.S Ride Ventura? Lead by Creek?….. hmmm) and from there took us the local way up to Ojai via the bike path. Just outside of town you take the unassuming turn onto a fire road that takes you up and over Sulphur Mtn. This climb is long, but with fantastic road conditions and some amazing view points. We recommend stocking up on water and snacks in Ventura, and carrying them into camp with you through Sulphur Mtn.

After saying our sweet goodbyes to Creek, we finished the climb and hit an unbelievable descent that lands you directly at Dennison Park Campsites. We were welcomed by an absolutely legendary park ranger, and set up our camp. The site had clean water, a power outlet, and bathrooms in really nice conditions.

A quick and spooky descent in the dark took us to the edge of town, where there are plenty of options for dinner/snacks, and food. Just consider that you’ve got to carry anything you buy about 1.5 mi back up to camp… MVP of the trip goes to Brian for carrying a 20lb bundle of wood on his back all the way up the climb. NECESSARY!

In the morning, you can enjoy and almost entirely downhill route back through Ojai and to Ventura, where you can grab brunch and catch whichever train you fancy back to your home city. Enjoy my friends!
